The Honor Bands of Oklahoma!

North Central Directors Association was established in the spring of 1987.  It was the vision of Owasso Band Director Harlan Lamkin to have an honor band experience of true quality with it's the sole purpose to produce outstanding performances with guest conductors of high quality.   Mr. Lamkin gained the support of Steve Workman at Ponca City High School and Dean Coale at Sapulpa High School and the NORTH CENTRAL DIRECTORS ASSOCIATION was formed.   This idea was to invite school districts in the area to join by invitation that were willing to share the same philosophy of a high caliber honor band experience with a disciplined approach to rehearsals, high quality literature, and an outstanding performance.

Our first August business meeting was held at Oklahoma State University, with the first audition at Ponca City High School in November of 1987.  Six Oklahoma school districts elected to join as founding members:

Blackwell
Jenks
Owasso
Perry
Sapulpa
Stillwater

Since the beginning seven more school districts have petitioned to join the NCDA honor band region.

Ponca City Band Director Steve Workman established the first auditions and hosted auditions with six active member schools the first year.  Oklahoma State University offered their site as a host for the first clinic and concert performances.

The original honor band instrumentation was based on the Oklahoma Music Educators Association's All-State band formula.   There was a High School (grades 10-12) and Junior High (grades 7-9) honor band group formed for the first 4 years.   After continued growth in number of school and students auditioning,  NCDA added a third honor group, the 7th grade honor band, in 1999.

Over the past 23 years, NCDA all region band clinics and concerts have included over 6,000 band students from member schools that have participated in the organization.
